A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

The development of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its role in civilian projects. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
