Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead with three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
