"When are you chatting with the band?" a message reads. "I wanted to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There's just a single issue: The sender also wants to be the Haims' additional sibling. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Several famous admirers have also petitioned for the role.

The evidence suggests something is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path doing sets at local delicatessens with their family. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy contenders.

Similar to the greatest bands, they're a close gang. Their music videos often depict them walking in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such unfettered happiness you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That is the greatest honour. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate people to make music."

"And thus everyone are welcome to be the honorary part of the family."

Award Recognition

The trio are connecting from home, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the accolade isn't lost on the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant step," continues Alana. "But we're just thankful for the women that came before us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The record emerged from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that odd transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The words track endings and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they want to be.

"I love summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in blocking the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That developed toughness called for a new sound – more unpolished and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drums.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The band's candor inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal horror stories.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Future

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their standing in the music world.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an global fan base.

Yet the sister act will forever be their top commitment.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still making music."
